Even the aftermath of war is a terrible thing and combined with poverty and living a life in a slum it can lead to organized crime and other terrible things.
Thankfully it has been long since we last experienced a war here in the western world, and hopefully we will not see it again, but the aftermath of war was reality in 1919’s Birmingham
and that is what Thomas Shelby and his family faces in the tv-series Peaky Blinders from 2013. It mainly focuses on the gang wars and crime underground of Birmingham, and how the war had affected the returned soldiers and their families.

We the shipyard, the factories, and muddy streets of Birmingham. It is here the story unfolds, among the less fortunate people of England.
Already here we have got a feeling of what we are about to see, and it is not the rich upper-class. It is the slum of England and the story of those who control it.
The setting of the story gives away a lot of what we are about to see, and the mood confirms it. The story takes place in 1919
and the men of Birmingham has returned from the first world war, but things are not the same. The city is in grief of both the ones they lost and the ones that came home different. When Grace sings in the Garrison and Thomas enters and she stops.
