Uddrag
In this Essay, I will analyse the short story “They’re not Your Husband” I will start by writing about the important persons in the story, there will be a characterization of the main persons in the story, Doreen, and Earl.
After we know all about the different personalities, I will explain about the time, place, and environment because it is imported to know where the story takes place
because there is a difference if it takes place in a small village in Africa or takes place I New York city.
When we know all the facts form the short story, their will be an analysis about how the title and the story is connected.
In the beginning of this short story, we are introduced to Earl and Doreen. Earl and Doreen have a relationship and kids together.
We get the impression that they love each other, but then we have our doubts. In the beginning, Earl is going into Doreen’s workplace to see where she works, which is sweet of him.
The problem this night is that Earl is sitting next to men, there is talking about Doreen, and their say that she is fat, and makes fun of her.
An important quote is “But some people like fat women.” This makes an impact on Earl, that makes him think that he must change Doreen, so he tells her to begin to lose weight
which is something you never should say to another person, you should never make another person change who they are.
This is a problem in Earl and Doreen’s relationship, he thinks more about what other people thinks than how Doreen feels.
To explain more about the two persons individual, I will write about them. I will start with Earl.
As you will read this short story, you could think that Earl is an alcoholic because in the start of the story where Earl decided to go to Doreen’s workplace, he comes from a drinking night and later in the story when he has put his children to bed
then he decided to go get drink again. So, it seems like he his drinking, often. You also hear about Doreen working but you never hear about Earl working, the only things he is doing is taking care of the children and shopping.
This family it is Doreen their works, to hold this family alive and Earl only makes it harder for Doreen.
Because Earl was impacted by the to men in the coffee shop, than he makes Doreen loses weight, so she should not only focus on her job but also thinking about eating healthy, because that was what Earl told her to do, “Earl is the Boss of Doreen”.
But what about Doreen, she is working hard for the family, and she is working at a coffeeshop. She does decide for herself because she have Earl to tell her what to do. When Earl tells her to lose weight, she just agrees with him.
