Rhetorical features play a major role in this article, both by its presence and by not being present. Hirsch using a lot of allusion in the beginning, she refers to people and events that would have made better sense if she had learned about the British Empire in school.
She mentions, among other things, Sinn Féin’s election success in Ireland, the political struggle for Hong Kong to retain its separate identity from China, and the rise and fall of Hindu nationalism in India.
Hirsch thus uses these references to establish his point of view by referring to people and events that people know. And that means she establishes pioneers without having to go into further detail.

Argumentation plays a big role in this kind of article because it is brewed on the journalist's attitudes and opinions. In this case, Hirsch's article is written to inform and illuminate this topic around the British Empire, but for the article to have the desired effect, Hirsch’s claims must be backed up by some form of evidence.
Hirsch's argumentation can be inserted into Toulmin's model of argument, his model is built on a claim, evidence, and warrant. An example could be that she in the first sections of the texts, makes a claim that she would understand the news much better if she had learned about the British Empire in school.
Her proof is to address these allusions and use them as her proof that these things are better understood with knowledge about the British Empire...
