Indledning
I’ve chosen to talk about suicide amongst Indigenous Australians. I chose this topic because I already know quite a lot about suicide and its rates in general and because I think it is important to acknowledge that the suicide rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are substantially higher than those in non-Indigenous Australians.

Back in 2017 suicide was the leading cause of death among children between the age of 5- 17.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people account for just 2.8% of the population, but over the past years, one in every four Australian children who died by suicide was Indigenous. Why aren’t we talking about this when it is such an important topic.

Data from the National Mortality Database from 2016 to 2019 showed the rates of suicide deaths per 100,000 people among Indigenous Australians were 16.5 and 44.9 in those aged 0–24 and 25–44 years respectively.

These rates were 3.2 and 2.7 times as high as in non– Indigenous Australians in the respective age groups.
