When having a friend, you feel obligated, having some kind of responsibility of your friend’s happiness and wellbeing, which sometimes can go wrong, when the unexpected thing happens.

In the article “My Best Friend Died by Suicide. I Wish I Had Seen the Warning Signs”, written by Daniel Magruder, he writes about how he lost his best friend and colleague, to PTSD and how he felt responsible and guilty.

Already in the headline, it immediately reveals that it revolves around a very important and tragic topic, which is suicide.

Pathos, which is used to create a relationship between the writer and the receiver of the story and is also used to appeal to the audience’s feelings.

Already in the beginning of the story, Daniel has a huge advantaged on getting his message out to his audience.

By using pathos, he relies on his own personal stories about his old colleague and very good friend, Neil Landsberg, who committed suicide.

“Six years ago, my best friend, Neil Landsberg, died by suicide.” (p. 1 ll. 3) This gives him a huge benefit, with the use of pathos, because people are getting connected with Daniel and his story about Neil.

Given that Magruder and Landsberg both were in the military and kept a close friendship to each other, it also helps Magruder becoming a reliable source.

Another used mode of persuasion, in the article, is logos, which is also used in the beginning, is where our writer is telling how affective suicide is in the US military.

“Suicide is the No. 1 killer of active-duty airmen in the United States Air Force.” (p. 1 ll. 1) This sets the tone quite fast, because of the realness of the facts, that the military and the PTSD that it brings with it, is ranked that high when there’s talked about suicide.
