PTSD and trauma are something that can happen to everyone. But especially veterans if they don’t get the medical help they need.
Committing suicide is something that unfortunately happens a lot and the suicide rate in the army is only growing.
To lose a friend, a family member, or a fellow soldier to PTSD is something Daniel Magruder experienced, when his friend and fellow soldier
Neil Landsberg committed suicide due to PTSD after they were in the Air Force together. In the article “My Best Friend Died by Suicide.
I Wish I Had Seen the Warning Signs” Magruder writes about his personal story from being a soldier in the Air Force and how he lost his friend Neil Landsberg to PTSD.

“Off he went like Captain America” (p.1.L.20). Magruder compares Neil with Captain America, and unlike the other men in the army, Neil never hesitated when it came to challenges, he just did it, did it like he was Captain America.
As Magruder writes, Neil made him feel inadequate. Neil was able to endure more physical pain than anyone and he quickly became known as the toughest guy in their class of cadets.
This is also why Magruder is worried about veterans killing themselves because mentally and physically Neil was the strongest person he knew, and if he could kill himself, who else might be struggling?
PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder and is a mental health condition that is mostly triggered by some sort of traumatic experience.
It is unfortunately very common for people in the military to suffer from PTSD, and it is a very few people who ask for help before it’s too late.
The reason for this may have many explanations but the two main reasons why, is properly that many people think it’s a form of weakness if you ask for help
and others might ask for help but the hospitals are not equipped for dealing with veterans suffering from PTSD.
Magruder also describes how no one in the army talked about when one of their fellow soldiers had passed away, because none of them didn´t know how to deal with it.
“Neil shouldered the pain and wouldn’t talk about it. None of us brought it up, because we didn’t know how to deal with the loss.
