H Mart becomes “a beautiful, holy place” (l. 83) because many customers and other people seem to be looking for the same experience, which appeals to a sense of connection. Generally
H Mart has become important for many people because it is the only place and their only way to keep in touch and reconnect with their original culture.
In the lines 96-108 of the article “Ever since my mom died, I cry in H Mart”, Michelle Zauner describes the communication between a Korean boy and his mother and compares their relationship with the one that she had with her mother.
The language in the lines 96-108 contains many different elements such as slang “ol’ waterworks” (l. 98) and contractions “he’s eating” (l. 99).
These elements make it very easy for the reader to follow the text and also feel kind of sympathetic towards the author, because she seems much more approachable using these elements.
Looking at the vocabulary, there are many Korean words as well, such as “seolleongtang” (l. 99) and “gochujang” (l. 100).
These words are a little reminder of Michelle Zauner’s Korean roots. At the end Zauner’ says; “How he should be kind to his mom, remember that life is fragile and she could be gone at any moment.
Tell her to go to the doctor and make sure there isn’t a small tumor growing inside her.” (ll. 106-108).
This points to the narrator seeing her own relationship with her mother in the comparing between the young Korean boy and his mother. It also highlights Michelle Zauner’s grief and guilt by losing her mother to cancer
