The suicide rate in the US army is growing. Daniel Magruder’s best friend died by suicide and he now talks about the importance of receiving treatment in good time, if you suffer from PTSD.
PTSD is a posttraumatic stress disorder that occurs to people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terror attack or been in war/combat.
It's a serious illness which plagues the US army, as many of their soldiers are simply killing themselves because of the lack of help they can receive.
As with most mental illnesses, no cure exists for PTSD, but the symptoms can be effectively managed to restore the affected individual to normal functioning. The best hope for treating PTSD is a combination of medication and therapy.

Daniel Magruder uses rhetorical questions and direct references to present his guilt about Landsbergs passing and raise awareness towards PTSD.
Magruder makes a reference to a plane incident that killed five soldiers in Baghdad. “I was still wrapping up my training when an Iraqi Air Force plane crashed outside Baghdad, killing all five aboard, including three fellow special-tactics operators, whom we all knew.” (l.23-25)
By presenting events like these Magruder paints a picture of what it’s like to be in the military. The mention of these events helps the reader to understand how Landsberg got PTSD and thus ended up taking his own life.
Magruder also reflects on how movies interpret war. A lot of hollywood movies that are being watched all over the world are often presenting war in a way that can tempt young folks to go to war
as they see the comradeship and stuff like that in the movies thus not thinking of the downsides of being in a war, like the way Magruder and Landsberg experienced it.
