The story uses a 3rd person narrator as the narrator says “he” about Husman. The narrator knows about Husman’s feelings and thoughts
“He was fascinated by the prices of things and how much you could earn as a tubab” (p. 71) & “The only tubab Husman didn’t like was the aid worker who lived in his compound” (p. 71).
The story is told from Husman’s perspective and point of view as an illegal immigrant coming to London to work with a focus on the cultural differences between Gambia and England.
---
As the time progresses she gets nicer to him, and even pays for his food. She also gets more attached to him and after 2 weeks, she suggests that he should move in with her.
Helen seems to use Husman because she is in a bad state of mind, after being seperated from her husband Graham, which was because of her cheating on him with his friend.
“Would you believe me if I told you I was thinking of throwing myself in front of a train?”(p.79) She had been so sad and lonely that she had developed suicidal thoughts.
She is a very wealthy woman, when she gets a new job, her earnings are around £60.000 pounds. Which is also reflected in her apartment.
She says that she has nothing to spend her money on, so she buys stuff for her apartment and other pointless things.
She also suggests that he should quit his job so he could relax more at home now that money wasn’t a problem.
Eventually she gets back together with Graham and wants Husman to just merely “Forget about us” (p.87) and she also states that “You knew it wasn’t going to last”.
Helen plays with Husmans feelings, right as they get close to each other, she pushes him away like nothing ever happened, she is very egotistical.
When she decided to get back with Graham, she blamed Husman for the situation “”And what about you? I never asked you to move in with me.
I never asked to pay for everything. I never asked you to attack my husband.”” (p. 87) She says this despite being the one who suggested he move in with her and that he should quit his job.
