In this assignment I am to write an analysis about The River Underground. Which deals with a man named Husman, who flees Gambia to London, to work, and thus make some money.
The focus of this assignment will be on, point of view, characterization, themes and message. The River Underground is written by Richard Tromans. Finally, a parallel between “The River Underground” and “The thing around your neck” will be drawn.
If we take a look at the narrator and the point of view, can we see. The story has a 3rd person narrator.
This means that "He" is said when talking about Husman. For example, it can be seen on page 71, line 13 " He was fascinated by the prices of things". The narrator knows a lot about Husman, and thus knows what Husman thinks and feels.
The River Underground is told from Husman's perspective, and thus also from his point of view, as a refugee who has traveled to another country to work, and see the cultural differences between Gambia and England.
Husman Husman is the main character in the short story, and he is therefore the person you follow throughout the text.
Husman really comes from gambia, which is located in Africa. He fled to London for work and could therefore send money home to his family in Gambia.
In London, he works as a cleaner. You can see many times in the text that Husman is very nice to people in London, especially when he is at work.
He tries to be very nice to people, however, ignore people just Husman. Husman had the feeling that everyone in England had a lot of money and was really wealthy.
Since moving to London, he's realized it's not what he expected. He will actually be quite disappointed when he finds out that all the people in England are not happy and wealthy.
Helen
Helen actually plays a huge role in the text, but especially in Husman's life. The first time she meets Husman, she's kind of embarrassed she's talked to someone like that.
