Indledning
Humans have always tried to be in harmony with nature. Not only because nature is beautiful and peaceful, but also because it’s the exclusive reason for our existence. If nature doesn’t exist, then humanity would not exist either.

Our existence is dependent on nature’s condition. If nature is under bad conditions, we as well would be affected badly. Therefore, humans must appreciate nature and be in harmony with it. Human and nature in harmony are seen in a lot of the literature today.

Our beloved writers try to give us a message about the importance of humans and nature in harmony in their texts.

As an example, we have Nancy Taylor’s short story “The River” (2011). In the story, we follow our main character who clearly isn’t in harmony with nature at the beginning.

Another example of the harmony between the girl and river is that she gets along with the swan; “Though she wants to see the swan, she doesn’t want to offend it nor tempt it to anger” (p. 3, l. 107).

Even though the swan is known for being aggressive and dangerous, it didn’t attack the girl. The reason behind this was, that she didn’t offend it, or tried to overtake its area.

The girl in the story has accepted the fact that the river is the swan’s house and part of its nature and would therefore not try to disturb its peace.

Quite opposite she helped the swan when it was trapped in a web of glistening nylon fishing lines. It was a very brave decision because as said before the swan is dangerous.

But because she was in harmony with the swan, and didn’t want to hurt it, she didn’t get hurt either.
