How would you react if you initially were chosen to win a big scholarship award at your school, but the award is taken away from you, because of your skin color? One Friday Morning is a short story by Langston Hughes.
The short story surrounds Nancy Lee, who is a student of color at an Art High School in America. Nancy Lee initially wins a big scholarship award for her art piece, which is quickly taken away from her, as the committee, responsible for the award, learns that the winner is a person of color. When Nancy Lee discovers why she is declined to receive the award, she obviously feels unfairly treated. This essay is going to focus on characterization, setting and theme.

There are many characters of the short story. One of them being Nancy Lee. Nancy Lee thinks that America is more accepting of race, than they turn out to be. That is seen when Nancy Lee mentions how proud she is of being a person of color in America, in her speech for winning the scholarship award, that she never gets to read out loud for the school, which says:
“I want to thank you for this award that means so much to me personally and through me to my people, the colored people of this city who, sometimes, are discouraged and bewildered, thinking that color and poverty are against them.”
Therefore, Nancy Lee thinks that the school accepts race diversity when she writes the speech, way more than they actually turn out to, when her winning the award, is declined. Therefore, Nancy is a round person, because she goes through a transformation, where she goes from thinking that her school is accepting of people of color, to learning that they are not.
Nancy Lee is also the protagonist of the story, because we throughout the whole story, follow what happens to her and learns things at the same time as she does. The reader gets to follow her changing perspective and perception of the American dream.
