The story is written from the 3rd person point of view, which enables the narrator of the story to be all-knowing. For example, “Nancy Lee was proud of being American
a Negro American with blood out of Africa a long time ago […]” (p. 29 l. 1-2), “she could still see her picture clearly in her mind’s eye” (p. 29 l. 24-25).
Here we get an example from the text, where we can see, that the story is told from the 3rd person point of view, because she gets referred to by her name “Nance Lee” & the personal pronouns used are “she”.
Even though the story is told as a 3rd narrator; we still get to come inside of Nancy Lee’s thoughts. “Outside the skies were gray. Nancy Lee’s thoughts were suddenly gray, too.” (p. 30 l. 15-16).
The 3rd person point of view allows us to get a glimpse into the character’s head, hear their inner thoughts, and understand the motives of different characters – in a way that would not be possible if the story was written from the 1st person point of view.
The primary character of the story is Nancy Lee. However, secondary characters Miss O’Shay & Miss Dietrich are also relevant to the themes and message of the story. The tertiary characters which appear in the story are Nancy’s parents.
The text gives details of Nancy Lee as a colored girl with slender brown eyes and brown cheeks. Nancy is a quiet and calm lady “But being a calm and quiet lady, she did not say anything [..]” (p. 27 l. 4).
