Indledning
One Friday morning, a short story written by Langston Hughes, is the story about a young colored girl and the issues that brings when in High School.

Although segregation, at this time, is a dominant conflict in American history, she is surprisingly well established amongst her noncolored peers. Her name is Nancy Lee. She paints and is unusually skilled.

One day at school, the principal called Nancy to her office. First, she was worried that she might have done something wrong or was failing a class.

To her great surprise the principal and her art teacher Miss Dietrich, who taught Nancy how to paint spring, were to congratulate her on winning the Artist Club scholarship.

Uddrag
Throughout this story Nancy Lee Johnson is portrayed as a happy, but quiet, girl with big ambitions and as someone who is both appreciative and proud to be an American.

Despite that, she still had an old love for her African background. She was taught the beauties of Africa and Miss Dietrich had shown her the sharp lines of African sculpture.

Nancy Lee was brought up in a modest Negro neighborhood. Her father worked as a mail carrier, and her mother as a social worker.

She is caring towards her parents and is always thinking of how their lives can improve and they wish the same for her. “But the scholarship would help a great deal, for they were not rich people.

“Now mother can have a new coat next winter,” Nancy Lee thought,” (P. 6). Nevertheless, as mentioned earlier, Nancy cared for her white classmates and they got along nicely.

“She was smart, pretty and brown, and fitted in well with the life of the school.” (P. 1). Although she was met by discrimination and prejudice, she still managed to keep up her beliefs in America and its future.
