Indledning
The story “One Friday Morning” was published in 1941 and written by Langston Hughes. The story is about a colored girl named Nancy Lee. Nancy Lee is a high school student who lives in the North of the United States.

She is proud of being African-America and believes in the America Dream of equality for everyone. She looks forward to being awarded a college scholarship in a painting competition, but something unexpected happens when the committee found out she is a colored girl. The committee deny her the prize because of embarrassment.

The primary character of the story is Nancy Lee. However, secondary characters Miss O’Shay & Miss Dietrich are also relevant to the themes and message of the story. The tertiary characters which appear in the story are Nancy’s parents.

The text gives details of Nancy Lee as a colored girl with slender brown eyes and brown cheeks. Nancy is a quiet and calm lady “But being a calm and quiet lady, she did not say anything [..]” (p. 27 l. 4).

She is a smart, passionate, pretty and a colored girl, who is well with the life of school. Nancy is a final year student and is well-liked among her white classmates and white teachers.

She is proud of being American, “Nancy Lee was proud of being American, a negro American with blood out of Africa a long time ago, […].” (p. 29 l. 1-2).

Nancy is a talented girl, who is very passionate about her art, “she could still see her picture clearly in her mind’s eye – for that picture waiting for the blue frame had come out of her soul, her own life […]” (p. 29 l. 24-26).
