Indledning
The theme of the short story in “Fireweed” is guilt and trauma. As an immigrant it is difficult to integrate in a new country, with new conditions and new things to deal with and had to change behavior.

The past leaves a big mark on yourself and is part of you. Witnessing to violence and war is a difficult experience to overcome.

It creates a kind of inequality when you come as immigrant, you must change your lifestyle and at the same time you are filled up with trauma from the past and maybe stress which makes it more difficult.

Fireweed is a type of a plant that burns. The word Fireweed has two meanings in the short story.

When Baluta lived in Liberia and was punished by his grandma when he had done something wrong, he never got beaten, but he had to have a kind of stringing nettle in his mouth which was called Fireweed.

His early years in Liberia were marked by poverty and hardship, including the tragic murder of his family when he was young, an event that continues to haunt him. Now he lives in the US, where he lives with his brother.
