Uddrag
We see an Indian family living under other "rules" than we have in Denmark.

The family is very divided by gender: “The parties were segregated: there was the kitchen, where the women gathered, and there was the living room, where the men stood and talked about politics, investments.” In India, it’s pretty normal to be forced into a marriage even if you aren’t in love with the person.

That’s what we see in this text, where the couple aren’t in love but are getting forced to be together. One of the reasons why the mother drinks alcohol could be because she wants to be separated from the others in Indian.

When the mother goes to the men, she is treated unfairly: “The men treated her with condescension and irritation, not so much because she was a woman as because she was a woman pretending” In this quote, we see oppression as men think women should be in the kitchen and talking about “female stuff”. It is not normal for women to drink too much in this Indian culture.
