Indledning
Today we are living in a world where the position in society means a lot. People often act and make choices based on societal demands instead of focusing on their personal development and approach.
This sometimes causes a spurious and dissociate relation between what is important. Exactly this topic is discussed in the short story “Beggarland” by Alan Sillitoe.

The main character is Jane, the mother of the story. Jane is an ambitious businesswoman who prioritizes her work over her family and her kids (l. 25-26).
Jane is described as a typical upper-class mom, who wants her kids to behave well and “be happy”, but still she hires someone else to do the upbringing and take care of the children instead of herself.
As an example, we see this in the story where Jane gives Greta some money, tells her to go have fun with the kids outside the house, and also that they should not come home for lunch (56-62).
At the beginning of the story, Jane was the only provider in the family, because her husband, Tim, had been redundant for about three months. This reveals that Jane earns a lot of money (l. 37-40).
