The story deals with problems such as challenges of being poorly educated, care failure, but most importantly lying to yourself and imaging having a better life than you actually have. As descripted in the text, Precious is different from the other children.
Precious speaks different kind of English than what we know as standard English. Examples of this in the text could be found in I say, "I ain' going nowhere mutherfucker till the bell ring.
I came here to learn maff and you gon' teach me." (p. 2, ll. 4-5), (p. 2, l. 17), “Kids is scared of me” or at (p. 2, l. 11).
Her use of language tells us that she is poorly educated, which comes down to her sociolect. She is from a poor quarter which reflects in her language.
