At Christmastime, everything is supposed to be peaceful and enjoyable, but in this short story we see, the reality of those whose Christmas is not exactly what they wanted.
In the short story “Noel” by Michael Plemmons, we meet children who are loanable for childless couples at Christmas time.
The short story was written in 1985, which means that the story itself is old fashioned.

The characters are not described very thoroughly, but you still get a good insight on them as a reader.
The amount of information you get about the characters is small, but the most described ones are Mrs.
Overton and Mrs. Hathaway. Mrs. Overton and Mrs. Hathaway both works in the shop, but with different posts. Mrs. Overton is the boss at the shop and Mrs. Hathaway is the Matron.
“You understand that this is only a 48-hour-agreement. The girl must be returned by noon on the day after Christmas or late charges will be assessed at ten dollars per hour and you will forfeit the insurance deposit” This is something Mrs. Overton tells some of her clients when they chose the girl, they wanted to bring home for Christmas.
