Indledning
In modern society, most people have or have had a sense of ambition. Ambition is an essential thing for humans because ambition makes a person strive towards the achievement of certain goals.

The importance of ambitions in both the individual person’s life and also the worlds overall progress can’t be downplayed, because without people with strong ambitions the world will never evolve.

But even though ambition is substantial it can in some cases be mistaken for arrogance which can lead to resentment. This is one of the main points that the short story “Tom Corridan” by Arhondia stresses.

Arhondia wrote and published “Tom Corridan” in 2018, but the story itself takes place in the 1970s.

This is indicated on multiple occasions throughout the book, “Trevor is blasting Thin Lizzy’s version of “Whiskey in the jar”(P. 1 L. 1) which was a big hit in 1973.

Furthermore, Tom mentions that he wants a bell-bottom, “I asked her to give them a bit of bell-bottom”(P. 1 L. 8), this was a popular way of wearing trousers in the 1970s.

In addition to the temporal setting, the book also explains that the story takes place in Dublin, Ireland. This is shown directly, “Without Trevor’s music(…) fucking hole in Dublin”(P. L. 12).

This is further shown through the use of real locations in the story, “Cherryfield road”(P. 1 L. 11) and “Bewleys Pub”(P. 2 L. 48).

By using real-world locations Arhondia makes the story more realistic and therefore more engaging. The temporal setting also contributes to this.

Furthermore, then the temporal setting, Arhondia also focuses a lot on the social setting in the short story. The story is centred around the Corridan family who is a working-class family.

The fact that the family is working class is displayed with them being financially challenged and the father being a plumber(P. 2 L. 48).
