It is a mess. Messier. Messiest. A fist flying and landing right in Tom's jaw. It is a mess. A belt that stings his back, but he does not make a sound.
Messier. After some time, Tom goes numb, and it does not burn anymore. The beating stops, and Tom knows that there will be a time where he will get hit again.
Messiest. Tom is the main character in the short story "Tom Corridan". The short story explores how children are affected by abuse and how they cope with it. The abuse witnessed in the text is used to force social heritage upon Tom and his sibling Joe.

Tom originates from a lower-class family. The text does not the reader directly that his family is poor, but it mentions that he has had freezing legs most of the year and finally obtained pants that could keep him warm (ll. 6-7).
Tom is smart and ambitious. In this quote "You have to focus on building your life. You could get a scholarship, Tom" (l. 107) we can see that Tom could potentially get a scholarship if he focuses on building his life.
He also learns Ancient Greek by taking extra classes with Father Flanagan’s guidance (ll. 21-22). His ambition is cut short though by his father's wishes. Tom's father, Frank, routinely mocks him and hits him when Tom becomes a bit rebellious.
