This short story follows a young woman that has to face a new reality: life in a wheelchair. It focuses on the ways she deals with her disability and interacts with her family and other people.
In Zoe lambert´s “The Skirt” from 2006, we hear about how Bethany takes up the issue of being physical disability and the consequences of both physical but also mental and how she overcomes the problem.
The narration is presented entirely through her point of view. “I closed my eyes till I could reach the chair with my hands. (line 10, page 1)”
A first person narrator makes the story more real and we get the problem and the feelings from Bethany’s side. She is a former comedian, but she had to quit her career and move back in with her mother and brother, after waking up paralyzed one morning.
