This short story follows a comedian who sits in a wheelchair called Bethany. The story focuses on her way of dealing with the struggles of being paralyzed. She is supposed to take a shopping trip with her aunt Joan and neighbor Jude.
Once her aunt Joan arrives, impatient to go shopping, Bethany retreats to her room, cuts the skirt her mother dressed her in, and chooses a pair of jeans instead, although it is more difficult to put them on because of her physical condition.
Joan thinks Bethany is in a bad mood because, as she says, she must have heard from him, although she does not specify who she is talking about. Afterwards, Bethany decides to sneak out of the house in her wheelchair.
she reaches the bus station, she notices people staring at her, and starts to feel embarrassed. Although the bus driver tells her initially that the bus is full and she cannot enter, an old man makes room for her, and she manages to fit in. However, she struggles not to cry.
