This analytical essay is about the short story “The first day”. The focus will be on characterization of the main character in "the First Day", which is Betsy.

The short story is about Betsy and Helena. Betsy is Helena’s mom, and they are on their way to elderly care home, where Betsy is headed.

Throughout the hole short story, it seems like a mother (Helena) is driving her daughter (Betsy) to her first day of kindergarten.

At the very end of the story, it becomes clear that it is a daughter (Helena) on her way to the elderly care home, with her elderly mother (Betsy).

They walked together, hand in hand, to the front door, Betsy clutching her pretty floral bag. There was a sign, letters engraved into a gold plaque: Lynd-hurst Care Home for the Elderly.

She let go of Betsy's hand and passed it to the lady. 'Come with me, then,' said the woman to Betsy. 'I'll look after you. We'll see you at three,' she said to Helena. 'See you later, Mum,' said Helena, as she left them, and went back to her car.

This episode has probably happened many years before when Betty stood with Helena holding her hand, to say goodbye, and drop her off at the kindergarten.

The roles change when your parents become old people who need the help and care. It is a kind of life cycle where children become adults and adults become old. The old are cared for by their own children in the last phase of life.
