Indledning
Having a rough past is something many people understand or have been going through. People deal with different kinds of difficulties from the past and overcome them in various ways.

Some people overcome the crises through love and others through hate. This is a central subject in the short story ‘Kiss’ by Elizabeth Baines.

As well as the young women, the man with dreadlocks had also experienced trauma in his childhood, because he was bullied, “The monkey noises and gestures, [...]” (l. 68).

He got bullied because of the color of his skin and because he was different. Growing up he lived with his mother, who worked as a cleaning lady at a hospital, which could indicate that the man was a part of the working class. He became an angry young man, which created problems for him with the police.

His experiences in his childhood have resulted in him starting to work in charity for troubled children, where he also met the young woman.

They connected over becoming a survivor of a hard childhood, “each recognized in the other - [...] - the courage of a survivor.” (l. 25-26).

The young couple represents two opposite personalities. The young woman is very insecure and introverted, where the man with dreadlock represents an angry character. However, they both evolve and start to work with troubled children, who need help.
