Good afternoon, fellow students and competitors.

I have been looking forward to taking part in the debate today. My name is Emma Smith. I have chosen to attend the debate because I find today's topic very socially relevant and not at least relevant for me as a young student.

Us young people have the world in front of us, I want our future to be bright. My bid is that you agree. We have to raise our voice - to take responsibility because it is our future it depends on.

My agenda is first to account for the increasing poverty in the UK, secondly, I will discuss different attitudes to poverty and finally, I will talk about possible consequences of the current austerity policies.

To begin with is it no secret that many families and people in the UK live in poverty. In 2017, 1.5 million people experienced destitution, meaning they had less than 10 pounds a day after housing costs, or they had to go without at least two essentials such as shelter, food, heat, light, clothing, or toiletries during a one-month period.

It is clearly a social problem, therefore you must think the government takes action, when they come across these tough numbers. But it seems more as if the government, and the country, is comfortable with the society that we have become.

Furthermore, instead of helping the poor families, the government and the ministers have argued that they had no choice to cut public spending. In other words it is not going in the right direction, life has just become a lot harder in recent years for millions of people in the UK.

Some of the most devastating and heartbreaking things, I have come across is about the child poverty.
