Good afternoon, fellow students and competitors.

I have been looking forward to take part in the debate today. My name is Emma Smith. I have chosen to attend the debate because I find todays topic very socially relevant and not at least relevant for me as a young student. Us young people have the world in front of us, I want our future to be bright. My bid is that you agree.

We have to raise our voice - to take responsibility, because it is our future it depends on. My agenda is first to account for the increasing poverty in the UK, secondly, I will discuss different attitudes to poverty and finally, I will talk about possible consequences of the current austerity policies.

The people in power, also called politicians, needs to make a stand, but sadly many of whom shares the opinion with the DWP, in particular Theresa May, who quotes a similar statement “The best route out of poverty for people is to be in the workplace.” 6But even worse, some politicians have even denied, that poverty in the UK exist.

As an example, the chancellor Phillip Hammond has rejected that there are millions of people living in dire poverty in Britain.

How can it be possible to have a government filled with blindfolded politicians, who all have overlooked the fact that 14 million people in the UK - a fifth of the population - live in poverty?8 Although the majority may have overlooked the increasing poverty, some has not, the politician Jeremy Corbyn from the Labour Party takes a stand against the government, he present at the rostrum some of the increasing poverty numbers, for instance he quotes “

This month we ́ve also leant that a record 1.6 million food parcels were given out last year alone, under this government things are getting worse.”

Furthermore, it is clear, that the politicians have different perceptions on, how to manage the increasing poverty or if it is even existing?
