Uddrag
Welcome everybody, my name is Emma and I’m a member of the debate team at my college, which is why today I participate in the Oxford Schools Regional Debate Competition.
I’m very grateful for your invitation and allowing me to give a speech about poverty in the UK.
Based on articles on this subject I would like to share different opinions towards poverty and possible consequences of the current austerity policies.
For many young people, but also in general families, life has become a lot harder. The reason for this is that every year, thousands of families do not have enough food to live.
After the welfare system has changed, hunger among populations has increased.
“The UK’s largest national food bank charity, the Trussell Trust, has documented a 5,146 percent increase in emergency food parcels distributed between 2008 and 2018 ”.
School teachers, professionals who work in community projects, childcare centers and social workers are some of the people who feel hunger and poverty a lot.
They can easily sense, that some children are going hungry in daycare or that parents are forced to send them, because they rely on the settings, that their children at least receive one hot meal a day.
Philip Alston, who is Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty, said that cuts in some public services in 2010 have created some consequences.
Philip Alston's report is based on having visited various cities in England. Philip Alston says the reason why it is like it is right now, is that "The bottom line is that much of the glue that has held British society together since the Second World War has been deliberately removed and replaced with a harsh and uncaring ethos” 2 .
It's scary that 1.5 million people live on less than 10 pounds a day. This amount is after all their costs.
