Welcome everybody, my name is Jakob, and I am a member of the debate team at my college, which is why today I participate in the Oxford Schools Regional Debate Competition.

I’m very thankful for your invitation and letting me give a speech about poverty in the UK. Based on articles on this subject I would like to share different opinions about poverty and possible consequences of the current austerity policies.

That 1.5 million people live on either 10 pounds or less a day is scary. Especially when you think about the prosperity and selfishness some have that you hardly want to think about the people and especially children who cannot do anything.

This gave him scary experiences during his trip around the country when he heard that some people were forced to make a choice between food or heat every day. The most frightening thing for him, however, was that poverty led to suicide.

Fortunately, the future looks bright if you ask Prof Alston as he believe there will be 200,000 less with poverty.

Even if this happens and the government does everything they can, Prof Alston still believes that “About 60% of people in poverty are in families where someone works, Prof Alston said”.
