Hello everyone and thank you for coming tonight. First and foremost, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jacob Clausen and I am financial expert working for the American business magazine BusinessWeek.
This evening I will talk about the battle between two of The United States’ largest online and physical retailers, Amazon and Walmart.
I will account for recent developments in the battle for supremacy between the two companies, explain what impact the conflict between the two has on the American economy and finally, I’ll discuss how the conflict will affect the lives of ordinary Americans.

Recently Walmart, the current largest retailer in not only America, but the entire world, has just edged into their biggest rival, Amazon’s, backyard by opening it’s 1000th online grocery pickup location in Seattle.
While Walmart is known for their huge physical stores, so called hypermarkets, they are now investing big in online retail, seeing as their largest rival, Amazon has a clear dominance on that market.
Furthermore, Walmart has landed a deal with Google to offer voice-activated shopping options. Meaning you can literally tell your Google-device what to order or add to your online shopping cart.
Pretty crazy, huh? Other investments Walmart has made in its digital presence is buying web-native shops like Modcloth.
While Walmart is predominantly trying to get a bigger market share in online-retail, Amazon are going a completely different route.
By acquiring organic grocer, Whole Foods, they are taking another step into the grocery business, a business where their rival are miles ahead when it comes to selection, price and sales.
So, while online sales may only account for 10 percent of overall retail, meaning Walmart and other physical supermarkets still are on top of retail it seems Amazon are religiously trying to increase that percentage, and Walmart are trying to get a larger share of those 10 percent.
