“Gideon” is a short story written by Z.Z. Packer in 2007. The short story deals with a couple that consists of a black woman and a Jewish man, Gideon.
The couple live together. The woman works at Pita Delicious, and the man works on his dissertation.
After the woman’s menstruation was AWOL, she takes a pregnancy test and decides to lie about it being negative to Gideon because she hopes to get a reaction out of him.
She runs away when he didn’t show any reaction at all, and it appears to her how different they are.
The main conflict of the story is the big difference between the two people. Due to their differences, they get insecure which results in an unstable relationship.

We all want a happy relationship, where we do not have to strive for agreement. What makes a relationship perfect, though, is very different, and today the definition of a relationship is different for each.
Some people don’t have the need to communicate all the time but would rather show their feelings in other ways and some wants the opposite.
The difference between two people can arise a conflict for some couples. In the short story “Gideon” written by Z.Z. Packer in 2007, the main characters struggle in a relationship because of their differences.
