Indledning
The short story “The lottery” by Shirley Jackson is following the traditional Plot structure. To participate in the lottery, the villagers gather in the village square.
The lottery is a yearly event, which takes place in this fictional village. It is all described from a third-persons point of view, and the narrator describes all the events that takes place, but he does not have any access to the thought of the characters.
The language in the short story, is a mix between narration and dialogue and is using a lot of symbolism. It is clear to see the symbolism trough the various items and rituals associated with The Lottery.

The events in the story, takes place in the fictional society, which each year is organizing the lottery, that is not the good kind of lottery.
It all ends with the winner being stoned, by the rest of the villagers. It all takes place at the same date and in the summer each year. At 27th of June.
In some communities this game, must take place over two days, because of the size of the community. “In some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 26th. (p. 25, L 7-9).
The social setting in the story is focusing on the traditional ways of living. The lottery is a tradition going way back in these communities. The villagers go along with it, because of the tradition.
