The short story “Edge of the world” (Souvankham Thammavongsa, 2020) revolves around a Laotian woman who describes her childhood and notably her relationship to and view of her mother. The girl, her mother and father are refugees from Laos and they now live in an
English speaking country, most likely the US or Australia. Although the girl likes her mother, it appears that it is difficult for the mother to adapt to the new ways in their new home
country and she seeks comfort in watching soap operas on TV. A decisive moment in their life happens when the mother buys a puzzle with a map of the World.
After the girl assembles the puzzle, the mother and girl have an argument on whether the World is round or flat.

The relationship between the characters in the story are somewhat tense and fragile. The mother and daughter who seem to have a somewhat close relationship.
The father is a bit distant from both the daughter and his wife. After the mother and father presumably fled from Laos, they couldn't move on and acclimate in the new environment, so the relationships in the family became this stagnating thing that never grew and evolved.
