Uddrag
The short story "Another Language" is about the boy James, whose grandfather, Dedo, is always sad because he misses the country he was born in - Yugoslavia.

Dedo says that the reason he had to leave his homeland is that he is stuttering when he speaks Serbian.

James realises that Dedo does stutter when he speaks English, and he becomes curious about Dedo's past. But Dedo is not talking about his past.

James becomes curious about why Dedo does not stutter when he speaks English, so he sets out to solve the mystery by initiating a friendship with a school friend, the bullying victim Marcus, who also stutters.

James' father explains that Dedo was expelled from Yugoslavia by Ustaše during World War II - and that Dedo actually never stuttered, but that he avoided telling James the truth because he wanted to protect him.

---

It is interesting that Dedo explains his lack of desire or ability to tell about his past with his stuttering.

One could argue that there are other reasons behind this than that Dedo simply wants to spare James the truth as James’ father explains to him:

“Dedo was just protecting you.” (l. 179). It could also be a plausible explanation that Dedo is also trying to take care of himself from ripping up traumatic experiences and emotions.
