Summary
“Edge of the World” by Souvankham Thammavongsa is a short story.

The short story is about a girl, that is now 45 years old. The girl looks back at her life and retells her story, when her mother still was with her and her dad.

The girl and her family are refugees from Loa, but they live now in an English-speaking country. The mother finds it very difficult to fit in and learn English.

Other than that, she also thinks that her husband is having an affair. The mother tries to fit in so hard, that she one day brought the cashiers at the Goodwill egg rolls hoping they will invite her to the back room to eat together.

But that didn’t happen. After many lost tries, she ends up leaving the house and her girl.

Analysis
Imagine living a life where you don’t fit in at all, no matter how much you do and how much you try to fit in.

Its not working. This might seem very hard and exhausting. But sadly, this is the reality for the girl and specially her mother in the short story “Edge of the World” by Souvankham Thammavongsa.

The short story deals with problems like not fitting in as a refugee, and how hard it’s to start a new life in a different place as its main theme as it follows the process the girl and her mother goes through as refugees living in a new country and trying to fit in.
