Jose targets other immigrants, activists or protesters against the deportation of immigrants. The readers of The New York Times seem to be democrats or people with a liberal view on politics , so one would imagine the readers agreeing with Jose on this topic.

Jose uses pathos to appeal to the readers and tells stories from his childhood where he had to trust a teacher with his biggest secret and live in fear every day.

In the beginning of the article Jose states that even if you did not choose to become an illegal immigrant, it is your choice who you can tell that secret to.
