Food waste is a growing global crisis with some serious issues that are affecting the health of the earth and the population of the entire planet. In addition to food waste, the developed countries like Europe and the United States can feed the whole continent in more than three times, that means almost half of all produced food will never be consumed.
By wasting food we also waste the "time and energy" that we have used to produce the food and as well our "natural resources" and the "limited available agricultural land" will be used up which could be handled in a much bet- ter and sustainable way.
Food wastage is a serious environmental concern facing the whole conti- nent. To determine the way out of this disaster is not easy.
There is a need for sacrifice to address this issue. This essay focuses on food wastage by discussing how food is wasted and how it can be avoided.
11.3 billion tons of food is wasted each year and a lot of it ends up in landfills. But how come? The biggest food wasters are Consumers. Consumers waste food because of cooking leftovers, eating leftovers, expired food and moldy food. A person’s lifestyle and household size are just some of the contributing factors to food wastage.
One way of addressing this problem is by informing the citizens of the waste they produce. According to Selina Juul “food waste is a lack of respect for our nature, for our society and for the people who produce the food.”
Therefore Selina made it her mission to stop food waste, and by doing so she changed the mentality of Denmark. 2She first changed the supermarkets, and because of Selina, Rema 1000 axed multi-buy offers and now gives a discount on single items ́. With the help of Selina, one single woman, Denmark managed to re- duce food waste by 25% in five years.
