The reason why India is staying poor is because, in the absence of national wealth, India redistributes poverty and stays poor while the US gets richer and richer.

One of the reasons why is that back when India was a British colony, universities became their first priority which resulted in high-quality universities and low quality in primary school.
This means that India is able to produce elite engineers and doctors while over 260 million minds are wasted.
When India became independent they never made an investment in primary school besides primary education becoming universal for all.
The reason why the prime education is not an option for everyone is again because India does not have the resources and the proper educators to do the work.
When there are this many kids in the country it is tough to get them all a good education with a solid management. And professionals to teach the young kids.
