Food waste is a huge problem here on earth that needs to be addressed. In my essay I will tell some facts about the problem, will go in depth with the problem and end with a solution and conclusion.

We have a lot of problems on earth and one of the biggest is food waste. An average person throws out about 15-20% food a year. In Denmark we throw out over 700,000 tons of food annually. The food currently wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people. By 2050 the world population will reach 9 billion.

By then, food production must be increased by 70% to meet the demands. The foods we throw out are 36% Fruit and vegetables, 25% Bakery Products, 16% Long-lasting foods, 16% Meat and meat products and 7% dairy products. food waste in the United States has increased by 50 percent since the 1970s. Why is that? Portion sizes have grown tremendously since then.

Plus, it’s become normal for restaurants and caterers to produce excessive menus and buffets and for consumers to buy more than they need. We are over 7 billion people on this planet, of which 925 million are starving. Yet we annually lose and waste 1,3 billion tons of food – or enough to feed 3 billion people.

Reducing food losses and waste must be among the main focus areas. But can we really afford it? when we know that several thousand families around the world are starving.
