The time setting of the fairy tale is difficult to determine, as it is meant to resemble a fairy tale, there is no specific time period mentioned in the text. As is typical of most fairy tales, the Shining Mountain begins with the sentence “once there was” (p. 18, l. 1), thus removing the importance of a specific time setting.
However, it is evident that the story takes place in modern times, as the main character (Pangma-La) comes home from school and watches the news on TV. “She would come home from an ordinary school day and there he would be on the BBC news” (p. 18, l. 10-13).
