The story features five characters: Pauline, Miss C. Bester (who prefers being called “Mrs” or “Madam”), her baby and two rapists. The main character is Pauline whose perspective is used to convey the events of the story.
Pauline is Madam’s maid and her duties is to watch over the house, care for it, her and her child. Pauline is a hardworking, strong individual who dislikes her employer, Miss Bester.
The story is set in South Africa after the end of the apartheid regime and era. The events of the story transpire within Miss Bester’s house. Miss Bester is a white female who comes across as a strong supporter of apartheid.
Pauline is, as stated previously, the main character and therefore is also the most complex character of all we read about.
