What scares us? What is it that leaves us unable to sleep and rushing up the dark stairs after a scary movie? If we go through a list of the classic horror movie villains, we can come up with a possible answer.

We are afraid of things or people we don’t understand. The frightening edge between familiar and unfamiliar. This phenomenon is what Freud has famously dubbed “the horror of the uncanny”.

Many of the scenes in Macbeth takes place during the nighttime which adds to the eerie and mysterious atmosphere which generally runs throughout the play.

This scene is no exception as it is set in lady Macbeth’s chamber over the course of one night. The scene starts out with a doctor expressing his concern over Lady Macbeth’s deteriorating situation:

“I have two nights watched with you, but can perceive no truth in your report. When was it she last walked?”.

This line refers to lady Macbeths new habit of sleepwalking which translates to her descent into madness. “Out, damned spot; out, I say . . . who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?”

she asks as she wanders through the halls of the castle. In this line it becomes apparent that she is now completely consumed by guilt.

Furthermore, the delusion of her bloodstained hands symbolizes the guilt that now sits like a permanent stain on her conscience.

When Macbeth first meets Lady Macbeth after killing Duncan his hands are stained with the blood of Duncan which causes him to be plagued by guilt.
