One single thing that we have all been assured in life, is the love from our family. Even though we may have fights with our parents or barely even speak for weeks, we have been told, that they will always be there for us.

They will always love us. But what if they don’t? When will someone’s actions be so sinful that it cannot be forgiven by their own family?

This concept is explored in Daniel Woodrells short story, Two Things, from 2011. The message of his story indicates forgiveness and whether or not prison changes you for the better.

McCoy is polite towards Frieda even though he is not excited about her visit. He is welcoming and good mannered which can be indicated in this quote, “I give her palm a little rub and tell her she is welcome.

When I see that she sits with her good I tell her to come into the house” . He is an upfront man who does not like to waste his time, which shows when he right away asks her what her visit is about.

He is also determined and stubborn. It is hard to change his mind when he has put his mind onto something, such as his son being a wicked thieve: “Cecil a thief I tell her.

And not that sly a one neither. Once was she says. No more. Always was. My mind is made up on that.” Him and Wilma has “a whole set of kids” which may perchance explain his cynical view towards this dilemma.
