Indledning
Why do some children bully? Why do some people treat others with disrespect and start fights and wars? Is it part of human nature? - a way to survive, when we define ourselves being more important or better than others without any real reason?
Luckily, focus on stopping any harassments is growing in most of the world, but will it ever stop? History doesn't help us to believe in a much better world, where man is treated equally. Inequality and harassment are themes of the short story “The Journey to the Brothers’ Farm” by Pippa Gough.
The short story is about a woman's journey from a naive and innocent girl - through a life with South Africa's apartheid - to an elderly woman, where she realises the evil consequences of the racist and male chauvinistic society before finally getting revenge.

The short story is analysed in the following, with special focus on the composition together with a description of the story’s use of contrasts and interpretation of the story’s themes.
The composition of the story is somewhat untraditional, as there is no typical chronological flow in the story.
Instead, the story shifts between three ways of telling the story; The main narrative describing the present with Annelie’s thoughts and the dialog with Thabo, Annelie’s flashbacks to her childhood and the statement given by Annelie to the police following the crime.
The narrative describing the presence - the day of the crime - is a 1st person narrative, where Annelie tells the story from her point of view including her dialogue with Thabo and Hendrik. Also in the flashbacks, Annelie is the 1st person narrator.
In the flashbacks from different periods and moments of Annelie’s childhood, we hear about her experiences, feelings and thoughts, giving background information from her early life.
The flashback sections make the reader better understand Annelie’s emotions and behavior during the presence part of the story as well as her relations with Thabo and Hendrick.
