Indledning
Everyday people from around the world flee their homes in fear of war, hunger, disease, or political persecution. Fleeing your home and moving to another part of the world can be a traumatic experience.

The people fleeing for all kinds of reasons are not just adults who are aware of the problems they are fleeing but also small children who are forced to experience this traumatic change in life. This is the case for the narrator, Aline, in the short story “Aline’s Journey” written by Edwidge Danticat in 2003.

Uddrag
This story is partly set in Haiti where the family is from, a place filled with both brutal natural disasters and with political persecution and partly in a hotel room in the USA. In Haiti the family lives in a small two room house close to the beach, a house that is frequently flooded during rainstorms.

During the story we also experience the setting on different boats as the family flee the political persecution in Haiti and the place that they are kept when arriving in the US. In the US they are taken to a hotel where several of the refugees live in a single room together.

This room has a sofa and a bed as its only furnishing and the windows are sealed shut so there is no chance of getting fresh air. It is described as a prison with guards at the door and no possibility of getting out.
