Illegal immigration is a huge problem in the United States some might say. However, the actual problem is the reason why illegal immigrants are moving. For people living in countries with deep poverty and corrupt law enforcement, illegal immigration can be the only way to survive.
Many people in the United States look down on illegal immigrants for being criminals, without considering the reason for their immigration. The main characters in Edwidge Danticat’s short story “Aline’s Journey” from 2003, are suddenly forced to immigrate after receiving death threats.
Illegal immigrants should not be treated as criminals breaking laws, but as people in need of help. When Aline and her family reached the coastline of Miami, they were not treated acceptably. “All we do is watch television all day. No other type of recreation.
No exercise. We can't even go out in the hallway.”(page 15, lines 27-29) As stated in the quote, Aline and her family were completely isolated from the world, almost as if they were in prison, which goes to show that they were immediately treated as criminals.
For a country such as America founded by immigrants, it is ridiculous that they refuse to aid people in desperate need.
