Racism has always existed, and sadly it is still a part of our society, even though efforts are being made to erase it. South African history has been marked by profound racism, which manifested in the Apartheid system.
As a result of the Apartheid regime, black citizens were treated as secondary citizens and they were controlled by the white minority. The racist system ended in the early 90s.

In Annelie's statements, she is very factual and objective, and sometimes even lies. This quote is a lie, as Annelie finds Hendriks alive. Annelie changes the situation to her favor, as she implicitly instructs Hendriks to kill himself.
