The story is told by a first-person narrator. Mags is the narrator and one of the main characters, therefore, her attitude reflects at the story, and how the atmosphere changes along with her attitude throughout the story.
She’s a young woman in a relationship with a divorced man, who has the daughter, Bella. The story took place, while Bella and Mags where in the city together.
Mags is doing everything Bella asks her to do, such as getting ice-cream at 9 AM, this suggests that’s she’s a rather weak-willed person.
Mags’s way of looking at life shifts from the beginning to the end, and she’s on a mental journey, in which she learns the real values in her life.
At the beginning she’s immature and pessimistic as she had just lost her job. She reflects over her previous life, where she had a job;
everything was better, and about how miserable her life is now. Her own troubles fade, as Bella disappears. She begins a panicked search for her, and she is overly relieved, after Bella is found unharmed.
The incident gives Mags a new perspective of her own life and points out to her what things really meant something to her. Her immaturity disappears at the end; “Perhaps I’ve aged significantly in the last half hour”.
