In “The Guilt” we meet an older woman named Lillian Thurgood. She lives alone as a widow, with her two special trained dogs.
For an extended period of time Lillian’s house is frequently visited by black people, who are begging her for money and clothes.
One day while Lillian is picking guavas, a black young man called William enters her gate, asking for a donation. She handles him five grand rands.
He refuses to accept the money and insist on working for the money instead. After an hour cleaning up leaves, he asks multiple times for more money, and Lilian gets terrified and asks him to leave, however he demands more money.
Lillian makes a sign to the dogs, and while they attack him, she finds her dead husband’s gun. The short story ends with Lillian threats him and says she will report him to the police.
